Heart to Heart: Meeting With God in the Lord's Prayer | Chapter ExcerptsFrom "Give Us This Day"God keeps us in daily dependence on Him so that we will stay close to Him, and the more we cling to Him and learn to trust Him, the more we will grow into His character: His unselfishness, His love. It is not a bad thing for us to need Him so much, nor is it wrong for our love for Him to be based on that need. He doesn't expect an infant to behave like an adult, although He does expect us to grow. He delights in us just as a mother delights in her little one. There is another facet to this: as a child grows older, it becomes aware that it has needs that transcend the physical. There comes a day in each of our lives when we realize that we need to be loved. Or some deep colour or beautiful strain of music strikes a new place inside of us, and we become aware of longings we didn't know we had. God keeps us near Him, daily dependent on Him for so many little things, because He knows that we have a deeper need we may not even recognize yet. He knows that the truest hunger in us is not for food or water, not for security or happiness, not for beauty or friendship—the truest hunger in each of our lives is for God Himself. And He will keep us near Him until we learn the truth and throw ourselves into His arms crying only, "Teach me to love You. I want You."
